Orange Conference 2008
The eight of us that went to the Orange Conference had a great time together. Here’s a little recap from the main sessions:
- the world is in need of “loving father churches” and not “older brother churches”
Loving Fathers…
-are preoccupied with whoever is missing
-operate from a context of forgiveness
-throw parties
-confront older brother thinking
-keep the lights on as long as it takes
Older Brothers…
- are preoccupied with themselves
-operate from a context of shame
-throw fits
-criticize loving fathers
-turn the lights off
Session 02: Francis Chan
- If our success is really all about the Holy Spirit’s presence, why aren’t we all about the Holy Spirit?
- What does Authentic Community really look like? – “I got your back, you got my back…whatever happens.”
- What are we doing that is American more than biblical?
Session 03: Donald Miller
- Leadership: A person who knows me in such a way that I want to take part in their vision.
- Leadership is not about a mass impact of influence but a personal investment in a small # of people.
- A leader is someone who creates something from nothing, who speaks existence into the void.

5) Personal Ministry
- Louie gets excited talking about God!
- The Church should be…
1) Incarnate – the Word became flesh and moved into the neighborhood
2) Other – different than everything else that we know of…God’s otherness should be reflected in the Church
3) Help – Full of grace and truth (these two don’t compete with each other)
4) Transcendant – present tense…not irrelevant, not relevant but transcending all time…if Christ is the message and we are communicating that message we will create culture not follow culture or adapt to culture. Our goal is to be the Church of Jesus Christ.

I hope that your team had a great time at the conference. Our team had a great time there and we are debriefing on the changes that we will nned to be making.

Kimberley- I’m glad you got to hear some of this. I hope it is helpful and useful. You guys do a great job with the little ones and nothing we do as a church would go well without you!
Orange also does some regional events that we’ve talked about taking a larger group to…since it would be most cost efficient. I hope that opportunity will present itself sometime in the future.
